HTPC and PVR the home for MegaEPG

First of all I’ve updated the channels definition file (--link removed as outdated--) with the latest Yes channels: Yes Stars 1,2,3. Discontinued channels (like StarWorld, Tchelet and Channel 3) were removed. Download the file (right click the link and choose “Save as”) and replace the one installed. Windows XP/MCE 2005 users have to put the channels.xml file to c:\Program Files\MegaEPG\Data directory. Vista users should put the file to c:\Users\username\AppData\Local\MegaEPG directory (replace username with the real user name).Vista users are also advised to remember this directory path of the MegaEPG data. Add it to Favorites or create a shortcut for further data updates either for the channels definition file or for the configuration file megaepg.ini

MegaEPG 0.9.10 has been released to the public. Download it from the official distribution page or from the mirror site.This release introduces the Windows Vista support. I hope many users will find it helpful despite the announced Yes EPG service for Vista. HOT users, owners of the English version of Vista, people that want the IMDB movies rating — all are welcome to install/upgrade and use this release.Few other bugs have been fixed as well. The setup now correctly identifies the MCE versions prior to RU2. I didn’t do too much about the episodes issue because getting the MegaEPG working under Vista with enabled User Access Control required a huge development effort.You don’t need anything else to run the MegaEPG in Vista. Moreover you have to uninstall or disable all other 3d party Vista EPG software, especially the KeepKey service. The MegaEPG has its own key keeping service and and the Web server emulator. You can also disable or uninstall the IIS since the MegaEPG does not rely on it (running IIS consumes a lot of system resources). Refer to the Readme file for the detailed setup instructions.

If you receive Error 14 when obtaining EPG in Microsoft Windows MCE, try to check the following list:

• Double check that you have executed megaepg.exe and have the guide downloaded and ready before the MCE tries to obtain it. Ensure that the file xml\guide.bin exists. Check the log files if necessary.
• Check the system date and time. Sometimes the error 14 would occur if the clock is incorrect.
• Check the ADMIN$ share. It is created by Windows by default and must exist for correct functionality of the MegaEPG. If you removed the ADMIN$ share, create it again on the Windows directory (C:\Windows).
• Start the Internet explorer and try to open the page file://compname/admin$/ehome/MegaEPG/data/GetTVServicesMetaInfo.html where compname is your computer name. If an error occured then you either don’t have the ADMIN$ share or did not install the MegaEPG correctly.

To view the computer shared resources, click on Start, Run, enter cmd and type net share at the command line.

I get more and more complaints about bad accuracy of the EPG provided by walla. I never found it very reliable, but it seems they are getting worse. We can excuse lack of data but a wrong data (wrong hours, overall schedule shifting) can’t be excused. I recommend not to use the walla script. I’ll remove it from the distribution for the next version, providing it for a separate download or maybe even removing completely.
